Nest Program

An academic program for students 2-3 years old.

Although this stage of development is often referred to as “The Terrible Twos,” we see it as a time of incredible growth and discovery. At SBMA, we recognize and appreciate the energy, determination, and curiosity that define toddlers. The N.E.S.T. (Nurturing Environment Specialized for Toddlers) program is thoughtfully designed to support and nurture these qualities in a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate environment.

An Environment Conducive to Learning

The goal of the N.E.S.T. environment is to cultivate a child’s own natural desire to learn. By offering meaningful choices and encouraging independent decision-making, we cultivate intrinsic motivation, self-discipline, and a strong ability to think and act for oneself. We gently guide children toward the empowering realization of “do it by myself,” uplifting their natural drive toward independence. In fostering a sense of capability, competence, and confidence, we help our students develop a positive relationship with learning that lasts a lifetime.

Our students engage in a rich variety of activities that reflect core Montessori principles. These include hands-on, practical life activities, art and music, early literacy, foundational math concepts, and exploration in science, culture, and physical development.

In addition, students are exposed to world languages–Spanish, French, and Mandarin–through simple vocabulary, familiar phrases, and engaging songs, broadening and solidifying their cultural awareness and linguistic foundation at an early age.

A Community

Our students grow together in a close-knit, caring community rooted in mutual respect and collaboration. As they work, learn, and explore side by side, they develop essential social and emotional skills–empathy, cooperation, and a sense of belonging. This shared experience fosters both individual growth and a collective spirit in which each child learns from and contributes to the success of others. Within this supportive community, children gain more than just academic knowledge—they cultivate friendships, confidence, and a strong foundation for lifelong learning and meaningful relationships.

“Help Me To Do It Myself”

Children have a natural drive to be independent, which we nurture through cultivating an environment where everything is scaled down, tailored to their size. Smaller furnishings and materials empower our students to engage in everyday tasks and understand the impact of their actions. Through enabling our students to comfortably navigate their classroom, we help them to build confidence and a sense of agency as they develop practical life skills. Toilet learning is a part of the NEST curriculum. Children are exposed to the World Languages we teach through basic words, phrases, and songs.

World Language Programs

SBMA’s program has been proven effective over the years both for native English-speaking children and for those with another mother tongue. The success of our program is grounded in Maria Montessori’s discovery of the very young child’s special sensitivity to language, which enables children to absorb a new language effortlessly and naturally in the first 6 years of life.

Children in the N.E.S.T. classroom are exposed to both Spanish and Mandarin through music, stories and circle time activities. Most students learn basic words and phrases over the course of the year.

Ready to Move Up

After spending the school year in our N.E.S.T. program, your child’s confidence and independence will grow, expressing a keen interest in broader concepts. They will excitedly look to what lies ahead, and it is at this point that they are ready to move up to the Primary program the following September.

Parent Reviews

five star reviews

Communication is stellar. I love the detailed notes from the NEST teachers about how hard the kiddos are working to learn new skills! Seeing photos of my kids loving to learn is the best.

While it's rare that something comes up that you haven't already raised directly with us, we appreciate the willingness to always listen to any questions or concerns we have and work with us to support our kiddo. We feel so grateful for the collaboration and knowing that you are all such a caring part of our team!
